Le Petit Ballon … A Tour De Force in Subscription Wine

Le Petit Ballon … A Tour De Force in Subscription Wine

There are many wine subscriptions out there but we were very happy to receive a call from Le Petit Ballon recently. Le Petit Ballon is a wine subscription company, and they sent us a couple of their exquisite wines to try. One white, one red. We were under no obligation to write a positive review but frankly it was difficult not to. Their wine are wonderful so here are our thoughts.

The white was a wine from  Anjou, somewhere A-C has been several times and has indeed admitted to filling her old Landrover to the gunnels with wine from the region because she is such a fan.
We were not dissapointed.  In appearance this Domaine des Trottières – 91/2 Anjou  was pale yellow to gold with a nose that was soft, slightly floral and definitely fruity, like plunging your face into a basket of fresh apricots or breathing in the scent of white flowers such as mimosa. Its flavour was rather refreshingly and crisply acid with mineral notes and  fresh fruit overtones, particularly apple.
We would recommend it with savoury tarts or with  grilled fish. Served ice-cold its a truly quaffable wine and one which we’d thoroughly recommend.

The red was equally delicious, from the Cote de Rhone, Cote de Rhone, Nicholas Pere et Fis – Essentielle 2013.  Softly fruity with a back hit of oak and pepper, this wine almost had a smokiness about it. Utterly delicious and it left us definitely wanting to uncork another. We served it with rare roast beef, crispy duck fat roasties and a Yorkshire pudding worthy of both our Grandmama’s approval. It also goes well with  with lamb, spicy food or a mature cheese. Speaking of cheese this is definitely a contender for our Autumn/Winter wine list at La Petite Bouchée

So how does it work?
Each month, Jean-Michel, former master sommelier at the Ritz,  selects a couple of his favourite wines for you. They will come with tasting notes and video; together with the Le Petit Ballon magazine, La Gazette, it is enough to make you a real afficionado, if you are not one already!  You can choose a three,six- or twelve month subscription. During the first three months you will discover all their different labels with real appreciation and delight. You can choose either an Apprentice Box at £29.90 per month or a Master Box at £39.90 a month.
